The number of candles on the birthday cake denotes the age of the celebrating person. It is an old tradition of the west to blow the lighted candles out. It is not part of the culture of India to light candles or cut cakes on a birthday. And it is not recommended in any religious faith to douse out the light in an auspicious occasion.
